Cinema and Multi Room Media – London

We had not long completed a smaller installation for the client on a property in the north east when he approached us about installing a system in his property in London.  Renovation works on the property had already started and he decided that he could not settle for this property to be with out an integrated media system.

As with all installations especially a project based a fare distance away, planning and preparation was key to a smooth installation.  As we had detailed architects drawings to work with we could really cover the main areas such as type of system and equipment locations before actually making an on site visit.  After a lengthy on site visit and meetings with the client, builder and electricians we covered the wiring requirements for first fix installation.

We had already installed a multi room audio solution in his north east property using a DF Solution media server and he basically wanted the same system but a little larger and more amplification.  We installed Polk SC series in ceiling speakers through out the various six audio zones connected to a 9 zone DF Solutions Base Server and used a Parasound multi channel amplifier to power them.  Additional rooms such as guest bedrooms have also been pre wired should the client wish to add more zones to the system.

Cinema

By far the largest element of this media solution was the eleven seat cinema room built in to the new extension.  This was a large room and a system we were really looking forward to being involved with.  The client pretty much new what he wanted in terms of layout and what the room should look like as his friend constructed a similar room the previous year.  We prepared scaled drawings for the builder who undertook the construction of the room which had layouts, wiring schematics and equipment locations for the room.  We liaised continuously with the builder throughout the project along with site visits throughout the period of building works and this resulted in a smooth installation throughout the property and thus a smooth second fix and commissioning period.  Definitive Technology UIW II in wall speakers were used in the cinema room with the two rears being mounted in to an angled section at the rear for a truly enveloping experience.  Two UIW reference series in wall subwoofers were used for low end sound in the room along with an acoustically transparent cinema screen from Stewart Filmscreen allowing the front speakers to be installed behind the screen out of sight.  We specified Sherbourn Technologies PT 7020A and 7-200 for processing and amplification in the room which provides pure distortion free sound at high levels.

For projection we opted for a 3 chip Sim 2 Grand Cinema C3X projector which provides jaw dropping images particularly with the latest Blu Ray movies.

Multi Room Video

High Definition video was installed to five rooms of the property including the Cinema Room.  For this we specified an 8x8 HDMI matrix switcher serving any high definition video source including the movie/music server to any room at any time.  All source, switching and control equipment was installed in the Cinemax equipment rack located alongside the cinema room in a service room, providing clutter free spaces through out for the family.   This area is basically the hub of the system and where the majority of sources reside.  During the design process local source equipment areas or designated.  These are basically local cupboards that would maybe contain DVD players or nodes for the movie/music system where you can play a DVD or add some media to your system eliminating the need for a walk to the service room.  There can also be cupboards or discreet in wall plates allowing handy locations or a handy connection point of games consoles etc.  In this case a great deal of attention was paid to this particular element to the system and plenty of pre wiring was specified to un connected rooms.

System Control

Philips pronto remotes were used throughout the five rooms including a TSU 9600 and a TSU 9800 in the cinema and large open plan living space giving real time two way communication with the DF Solutions media server right on the touch screen.  The DF Solutions server and its individual audio outputs which are connected to the speakers around the house can be controlled directly from the wireless touch screens with on screen zone, volume and music control on the touch screen itself. The server also has a TV interface available at ay TV point which also provides control of the full system.  The wireless touch screen controllers provide an easy interface for the client and his family offering one touch setup of all there media activities.

Lighting Control

There were certain areas where lighting scene control was certainly beneficial, this being the cinema, lounge, master bedroom and large family room areas.  Lutron Grafik Eye systems were used for each area with additional Grafik keypads installed in convenient locations for other control points.  Control of the lighting system in each room is available on the Pronto touch screens.  A few months after we completed the works inside the property we were asked to commission the lighting system outside the property and integrate the outdoor lighting with the Lutron system.  The client had since commissioned a landscaping company to overhaul the garden as well as construct what we think is a stunning Patio area.  The landscapers ran all the relevant cable in and fitted the lighting and we covered the final connection and commission including programming scenes etc  We also installed an astronomic time clock to automate the exterior lighting at dawn and dusk.

Vanity TV

Last but not least was the custom vanity mirror TV for the En-Suite from Aquavision.  The client had seen a smaller version of one previously and could not believe how well they work, or how they do it for that matter.  We had this custom made as one complete mirror unit which was then slotted in to place by ourselves and the bathroom installation team.  Very cool!
