Multi Room Audio and Video with a little something for the kids

The client was basically sick of having the families four Sky HD boxes installed in different rooms of the house. They required a way of removing the clutter of source equipment and also giving access to all HD sources across the nine rooms which were proposed to have televisions. Along with this a Multi Room audio system was required which provided distribution of the families digital music and radio to 12 different zones.

We proposed an 8 x 8 HDMI matrix switcher from RT COM which allows any eight HDMI sources to be routed to eight televisions in any manner. The ninth television which was a guest bedroom uses a composite video/stereo switcher for source access. These particular setups are great for families with multiple sky boxes and lots of TV’s as it allows Sky + recorded programme’s to be viewed in any room from any sky box. The Sky boxes are all held centrally along with other source and control equipment in an equipment rack installed out of sight. The system provides clutter free viewing from every source in glorious HD.

New hidden Cat 5e, Cat 6 and speaker wiring was run to all the various rooms to accommodate the new system leaving plenty spare for expansion. We only installed one room or area at a time to minimize disruption. Getting the cables to where they needed to be was no mean feat and as usual we went through an awful lot of plastic sheeting.

Control

Each room has a URC MX 980 RF remote control with handy charger dock for easy automated setup and control of the system via reliable RF. These communicate to a central URC MSC 400 system controller which is the brains of the system.

Multi Room Audio

We agreed on a Sonos system as this was a retrofit project and in this instance due to the construction in wall keypads and touch screens would have caused too much distribution to newly decorated rooms and besides Sonos is a fantastic system with bags of features for digitally stored music. There were a few locations throughout the house to install the Sonos Zone players out of sight and we also kept all units hard wired with Cat 5e to avoid any potential wireless problems. The system uses in ceiling speakers through out from Nuvo Technologies apart from the Snooker Room which has a surround sound system using Sonance Ellipse directional speakers. A number of wireless controllers for the Sonos system were placed around the house for easy access to the system.

Media Max Server

1080P High Definition movies right through the house

Available on any screen in the house is a Media Max Server from Axonix. The system can

support literally thousands of movies in Blu ray, HD DVD and DVD. It also stores the families

music, photos and holiday videos avoiding the hassle of searching through movie collections

in cupboards only to find an empty case.

Something for the kids

We were asked to install a system for the kids in their very own Play Room. We had a discussion with the Mother who happens to be a teacher and she said that an Interactive whiteboard would be great for the kids. We have actually installed quite a few of these before in commercial environments, so we were asked to supply and install the system along with a good quality projector. We integrated the system so it has full access to the video distribution system and also tucked away in a cupboard is an array of the latest games consoles which are also available in the Snooker Room. Our friends at Aristocrat Leisure who fitted out the snooker room were commissioned to manufacture matching coffee table, a desk for the laptop and shelving etc for the room. The kids love using the Whiteboard and also love watching there favourite children’s movies on the big screen. The older generation of the house also makes use of the room and do watch quite a few movies in there. They now really want a dedicated cinema room in the new loft conversion later in the year.
