Hidden Multi Room Audio, HDMI Distribution and Blu Ray Movie Server

The clients brief was initially ‘please help me out ‘ as unfortunately the family had been let

down by another installation company a few weeks before moving in to their fully refurbished

home. The client was after an easy to use Multi Room audio system which could play a

large digital music collection which resided in iTunes and handle eleven individual zones from

the outset. We quickly found that there was little wiring installed at first fix to accommodate

this properly so we had to move fast to install new cabling right through the house. The

decorators were just about finishing off and some of the carpets were already laid. The family

stressed that they did not want any equipment such as audio/video sources, cabling, in wall

touch screens and keypads in sight throughout the home.

We chose a Sonos system as it is perfect for digital music collections and allowed

distributed installation of the zone amplifiers throughout the property along with easy wireless

control. We did however manage to hard wire all the Sonos zone players with Cat 5e

eliminating the possibility of wireless dropouts etc. You can control the full system from any

Sonos controller so we placed few around the home in cupboards for easy access.

As the last installation company had already installed a few in ceiling speakers the clients

realized they just did not like the look of them. We proposed hidden plaster in speakers from

Amina Technologies for use throughout the house. The decorator and interior designer who

were initially concerned about cutting lots of holes in the finished walls and ceilings was

amazed at how we managed to install these and reinstate everything back to a perfect finish

with very little disruption.

The Garden was not left out, we installed two pairs of discreet Rock effect speakers in the

flower beds which give a great quality sound.

We carried the hidden theme in to the main lounge where we installed a 5.1 surround sound

system with the Amina speakers and used a Definitive Technology in wall subwoofer which

was kept out of sight. The TV was also going to be a problem in this room as the client did

not want it visible when it was not in use. After discussion we opted for a Tri Custom Mirror

TV system with a custom frame chosen by the client’s interior designer. The system

features a blackout roller behind the mirror that moves up and down automatically when

switching the TV on and off. This proved tricky as it required the TV to be recessed involving

removal of brickwork from the chimney breast and moving the supporting lintel, not to mention

the carpet was already down!

High Definition movies right through the house

Available on any screen in the house is a Media Max Server from Axonix. The system can

support literally thousands of movies in Blu ray, HD DVD and DVD. It also stores the families

music, photos and holiday videos avoiding the hassle of raking through movie collections in

cupboards only to find an empty case.

Video Distribution and Control

We used HDMI video distribution allowing the two Sky HD boxes, Media Server and CCTV to be viewable on any screen in crystal clear high definition.

URC MX 980 LCD remote controls were programmed for TV control in each room allowing one button press setup of the video system and easy control of all the central sources including the lights.

A last minute addition was some Rako lighting to automate a number of external and internal lights via a Time clock which automatically switches lights and other connected systems at dawn, dusk or timed intervals. This is particularly useful when the client and family are away on Holiday but day to day it just takes away the hassle of switching everyday lights on and off. We have even included control and automation of the gardens sprinklers, soak pipes and fountains system controllable from home or abroad.
